How much does a pizza cost? Some numbers and evaluations

Pizza as a popular and universal dish

Rivers of words and well-deserved praise have been spent on pizza and its good qualities, confirmed by the success that this exquisite dish collects all over the world.

Its peculiar characteristics, of form and substance, distinguish it from any other preparation; but, really, how much does the pizza cost?

There are many factors that determine the variety of prices, although not all of them depend on the cost of raw materials and indeed, for the most part, they have a different origin.

How much does a pizza cost

Take, for example, the pizza "Margherita", the most popular and well-known and also the one that contains fewer ingredients than the more elaborate preparations.

Between one pizzeria and another, the cost shown on the menu varies significantly: on average, to enjoy a classic "Margherita" we pay 4/5 euros, but in some places the price goes up to 7 euros.

An increase due to the cost of raw materials? Not always, indeed often the surcharge we pay is just a factor that falls within the mechanisms of marketing.

Let's do the math, considering the current average prices of the ingredients: for each loaf of dough (from 180/200 g), you need flour (170 g, about € 0.12), water (110 g, about € 0.001), salt ( 5 g, about € 0.002) and yeast (0.5 g, about € 0.04), for a total of € 0.163.

For the dressing of a margherita you need 100 g of tomato sauce (€ 0.10), 100 g of mozzarella (€ 0.50), for a total of € 0.60, as well as a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a few leaves of basil or oregano, the cost of which does not particularly affect the final price of the single product.

Based on these data, therefore, the creation of a "Margherita" pizza costs, on average, € 0.76: to this figure must obviously be added the costs of the premises, personnel, machinery, cooking tools, energy and the value (not economically quantifiable) of the pizza chef's work.

And it is these latest data, rather than the "food cost", that affect the final price which ... rises together with the dough, reaching the levels we all know.

How much does a pizza cost in a pizzeria

Basically, therefore, it is the entrepreneurial and logistic variables that determine the price of the pizzeria product.

Not surprisingly, in a big city pizza is more expensive than that sold in a small town: even here, however, there are factors (such as the tenor of the place, its reputation, the service it offers and its location, central or not) affecting consumer prices.

In Rome, Milan, Naples or other cities, for example, we can eat an excellent pizza margherita for 5/6 euros, but if we go to a "gourmet" pizzeria, the price goes up.

Indeed, if we choose to dine in a restaurant that has won important awards (such as Gambero Rosso's "Tre Spicchi"), the price of a pizza can be much higher, reaching (and in some cases exceeding) 21 euros.

How much does it cost to make a good pizza at home

If we prepare the pizza in the kitchen of our house, the additional costs that we have considered previously will obviously be missing.

And if the doubt concerns the goodness of the final result, there is an infallible system for not being disappointed: rely on the most appropriate cooking tools, such as domestic Spice, electric and gas ovens.

In fact, we know that, to cook pizza perfectly, you need an oven capable of touching and maintaining constant very high temperatures: elegant and compact, the Spice electric ovens reach 400 ° C in a few minutes, while the versatile gas Diavola model for outdoors, in just 15 minutes it even reaches a temperature of 500 ° C.

All Spice ovens can be combined with a refractory stone hob that optimizes cooking results, has a simple and quick maintenance and their initial cost is amortized in a short time.

Therefore, we just have to personally choose the raw materials and prepare an excellent pizza, enjoying it at home without additional costs.

Then another fundamental ingredient is needed: passion… but even that costs nothing, on the contrary it manifests and enhances our work and our commitment.
