Seasonal fruit: how to best preserve it

Food and seasonality

Nowadays it's easy for us to find everything we want in the supermarket, whatever the season. We know well, however, that fruit , if it is not seasonal, does not have the nutritional properties that we usually eat it for. In other words, it would always be good to buy only the fruit that ripens at the time of purchase in our latitudes, and avoid buying, for example, strawberries in winter. Also because there is the possibility of preserving seasonal fruit in such a way as to be able to enjoy it at any time we wish , with all its load of vitamins, mineral salts and other nutrients precious for our body .

A first option, of course, is the refrigerator, a precious help around the house because it allows you to keep all food fresh much longer than we could otherwise. Especially in summer, when the temperatures are very high, it is good to keep the fruit in the refrigerator to prevent it from rotting. There are special drawers in which to store it, which allow you to keep it fresh for longer. Of course, however, we always talk about short periods : if we kept the apples in the refrigerator for months, they would rot anyway.

Food preservation

Not to mention that there are fruits that are absolutely not recommended to keep in the refrigerator, such as bananas. The alternative to preserve seasonal fruit for a long time is a procedure as old as the world, but today it is very easy to practice even in our homes thanks to modern technologies that simplify everything. In fact, a very effective way for the preservation of food , and therefore also of fruit, is drying or dehydration . Once upon a time they simply used the light and heat of the sun. Today we can make use of very practical tools such as the home dryer.

Food drying

Let's first clarify what the practice of drying or dehydration of food consists of. Drying is a procedure that is as elementary as it is very useful for the long conservation of food without having to use either freezers or refrigerators. Not to mention that a dried food can last much longer than a frozen one, keeping all its organoleptic properties intact. How is it possible? The explanation is very simple.

Let's take the example of fruit: fruit always contains large quantities of water, which over time causes it to rot and go bad. By depriving the apple of the water it contains, the effect is obtained of not making it deteriorate. In addition, more importantly, all the nutritional properties it possesses remain in the fruit, since they are not contained in the water but in the pulp itself.

Dehydrated fruit can be eaten as a healthy and tasty snack, it can be used to make desserts or salads, and it keeps for a long time without changing its characteristics. There remains the problem of how to perform the dehydration procedure at home: here comes the home dryer, like the Teseko food dehydrator . The dryer is not a completely new appliance, but only relatively recently has it become accessible to everyone and has entered the homes of anyone and not just the kitchens of great chefs. It is a device that, with a minimum size and very low energy consumption, reproduces what the wind and the sun would do in nature, but considerably accelerating the times.

In the city it would be extremely difficult to find a place to spread slices of mushrooms, apples, oranges, and so on. Instead, in the dryer there are practical drawers on which to place the fruit you intend to dehydrate. In a few hours the process is complete and a good supply of vitamins and nutrients is available.

The dryer , like the one produced by Teseko, is a household appliance particularly recommended for those who have a small vegetable garden, or even just pots on the balcony where they grow fruit. In fact, domestic production will never go to waste, if it is possible to preserve surpluses through the practice of drying, which is a friend of the environment and health ... as well as taste! In fact, dehydrated fruit not only does not lose flavor, on the contrary, it often enhances it, becoming sweeter and tastier to eat.
